Exhibition: 'VC: For Valour - Sapper VCs of the First World War'
3rd July - 21st December 2018
Ordinary Men – Extraordinary Actions 2018 Marks the centenary of the Armistice which brought the First World War to an end. We will be marking the anniversary with a major exhibition and community-based project focusing on the Sapper Victoria Crosses of the First World War.
The Museum holds ten original VCs won by soldiers of the Royal Engineers during the War which will be displayed as part of the exhibition. Displays and artefacts will tell the stories that surround the awards and the lives of the Engineers, both before and after the acts of valour that were rewarded by the Victoria Cross. The project will focus on the physical heritage of the First World War through the collection of ten Victoria Crosses received by Royal Engineers, all of which are held by the Museum.
Through this, the individual stories of these soldiers can be told through personal items such as diaries, service dress and letters. The project will also allow the public a unique opportunity to see the genuine VCs on display within the museum. One component of the exhibition will be the exploration of the concept of valour in the War, and the legacies of the highest military award in the UK.
Visitors will be able to contribute their thoughts and reactions either through comment cards when visiting the exhibition or by taking part one of a series of structured workshops.
