Union Windmill, the tallest Smock Mill in the Country, stands overlooking the historic Wealden town of Cranbrook. Built in 1814, it is a Grade 1 Listed structure, and possibly the finest windmill in England.
Still in working order, you may be lucky on your visit to Cranbrook to be greeted by the sight of the great sails (known locally as “Sweeps”) turning in the wind.
There are 7 floors open to the public (limited disabled access) and each floor includes displays of machinery and equipment relating to milling by wind power.
Accompanied Children are very welcome and can try their hands at making flour using techniques which date back 10,000 years.
Get blown away by the views from the top floor and at the end of your visit you can buy (subject to availability) a bag of Stone Ground Wholemeal Flour and try baking some “Real Bread” at home.
