Explore the gardens and interior of Canterbury Cathedral as you uncover the fascinating story of how plants were grown in the Middle Ages, and then learn how a local Canterbury brewery is using botanicals today. Examine the roots of Kent’s reputation as the ‘Garden of England’ and the role Canterbury’s monks played in the development of gardening, discovering how Cathedral monks produced their own food and even had a brewery on site! Discover the medieval uses for herbs, from food to medicine, and the medieval attitudes to disease and its treatment. Visitors will be introduced to their Herbarium featuring plants they may know and others they may not, and learn how this medieval herb garden was re-imagined by 20th century gardeners.
This 3-4 hour experience features a guided Herb Garden and Cathedral tour led by a Cathedral guide, followed by local distillery and pub ‘The Foundry’ in central Canterbury with a guided brewery tour and tutored beer tasting. The Foundry have just produced a new gin inspired by the Cathedral garden, featuring herbs grown in the Cathedral Herbarium.
